Lymph massage is a big part of Mr. Pilates Control Lymph massage is a big part of Mr. Pilates Contrology exercises. This archival Pedi-pole exercise helps to massage the lymph nodes in the armpit, chest and front of the neck by the collar bone; notice the internal rotation of the arm, then the lift of the shoulders, and opening of the chest. Both Romana and Ron Fletcher always said the Pedi-pole was great for people who had breast cancer. I use this exercise on my clients who’ve had breast cancer, they have no edema in their arms, even when many lymph nodes have been removed. Mr Pilates just simply understood how the body worked, not just muscles, but the nervous system, the Lymph System, Organs, lungs. So much more than just a gym workout. Contrology is a full body health system!

Mr Pilates included the Standing Footwork in his b Mr Pilates included the Standing Footwork in his big group Mat classes. He would often refer to the Mechanism of the Human Body, and what it is capable of doing naturally.
This particular movement is difficult at all ages, I’ve given this movement to elementary aged kids, dancers, athletes of all types and seniors. Most find it challenging.
-Use the Breath and Powerhouse to align the body for balance
-Relate the movement to what you feel on the Reformer, keeping the neck lined up with the tailbone, it becomes much more doable.
I remember Romana demonstrating this movement wearing Kitten heals! And Ron Fletcher demonstrating this with his big barrel chest. Both in their late 70’s, but able to do because of their alignment.
Amazing!

Balance- as a body ages, organizing the whole syst Balance- as a body ages, organizing the whole system becomes harder. Straight Leg Press Front is an archival exercise with the purpose of an aligned nerve stretch from the neck all the way down the back of the leg.
Mr Pilates knew that the only way to truly stretch muscles is to stretch the nerves. The nerves tell the muscles what to do. Combined with Balance and control of the pedal, this exercise helps to practice organizing all of these efforts in the body. So that, when an older person is out in the world, they won’t miss step and fall.

The Shoulder Bridge — Exercise XVIII from Joseph The Shoulder Bridge — Exercise XVIII from Joseph Pilates’ Return to Life.

The 18th exercise in the Contrology mat sequence is an advanced movement that demands strength, flexibility, awareness, and, of course, control.

The directions are simple: inhale and lift the leg as high as it can go without torquing the pelvis out of alignment. Exhale and lower the leg, reaching long from the hip.

This exercise was designed to open and stretch the front of the chest, psoas, hip flexors, and hamstrings. And as always in Pilates, the challenge isn’t just the movement—it’s the control behind it.

The abdominals stay engaged to prevent the ribs from splaying open. The upper back works to keep the elbows anchored beneath the body. Every part has a job.

Working up to this movement requires:
• Pelvic lifts
• Flexibility through the chest and shoulders
• Strong wrists
• Awareness of your body in space

A beautiful reminder that Pilates is never just about getting into the shape—it’s about how you get there.
Have you mastered Shoulder Bridge yet, or is it still a work in progress?” #pilatestechnique #josephpilates #contrology #pilatesmat #archivalpilates
